Anti-GMO Activism List

The index below provides an overview of anti-GMO activism initiatives and organizations globally.

In 2021 several science organizations declared that the GMO debate is over and that anti-GMO activism faded away for good (About). They were right and anti-GMO activism did fade away, leaving nature unprotected in many regions of the world.

Please consider to fund GMODebate.org with a donation to help undo the effects of abandonment of anti-GMO activism! Help create a new initiative to protect nature against eugenics in your country or in other regions of the world.

[{"description":"The Horizon Scanning Biotechnology project is part of our Project Genetic Engineering and the Environment (Fachstelle Gentechnik und Umwelt, FGU), focussing primarily on researching new scientific publications in relevant fields of biotechnology.\n\nThe discovery and application of the CRISPR\/Cas transformation technique represented a technical breakthrough for biotechnology. At the same time, the expansion of automation in laboratories, the growing stock of sequence information and ever easier synthesis of genomes are leading to the development of more and qualitatively novel genetically modified organisms will. New methods and approaches entail new challenges for assessment concepts if products developed with them are to be approved for the market and released into the environment.\n\nThe Department of Genetic Engineering and Environment carries out horizon scanning, i.e. research and evaluation of published and other specialist literature. In this way, possible environmental impacts of new technical developments and their applications in the field of genetic engineering\/biotechnology are to be identified at an early stage and then also analyzed, with special consideration of the precautionary principle.\n\nFurthermore, the department also researches the social and political discourses and evaluation categories for methods of genome editing and synthetic biology in and outside of Europe and compares them with each other.\n\nThe results of this horizon scanning are intended to serve as an information basis for authorities and science on the one hand and, on the other hand, to be processed and made available in a way that is appropriate for the public and political discourse and for civil society.\n\nA project-accompanying working group (PAG) advises the department in its work. It includes civil society organizations and environmental associations that deal with the consequences of genetic engineering and biotechnology for agricultural systems, seed and food production, environmental protection and nature conservation, as well as scientists from the fields of environment and genetic engineering. [{"description":"In the IG seeds, plant breeders, seeds and maintenance initiatives have come together.\n\nSince 2005, the interest group for genetic engineering-free seed work (IG Saatgut) has been committed to educational, public and networking work for political and legal framework conditions, which are intended to permanently ensure genetic engineering-free seed work. We would like to maintain and develop the genetic engineering variety of cultural plants -free variety of crops as the basis for self -determined production and use of seeds and food. In addition, we are committed to ensuring that the genetic engineering variety of cultural plants remains freely accessible for conservation and breeding work. [{"description":"The Stop Gene Drives campaign calls for preventing the release of genetically modified gene drive organisms into nature. Gene drive organisms represent one of the riskiest uses of genetic engineering ever developed.\n\nA representative survey shows that the majority of Europeans find the release of gene drive organisms too risky. NGOs from all over the world are calling for a global gene drive moratorium.\n\nWith new genetic engineering methods such as CRISPR\/Cas, animals and plants are to be genetically manipulated during reproduction in such a way that they pass on a new characteristic to all their offspring - even if it is deadly for them. Gene drives override the natural rules of inheritance. This mechanism then repeats itself independently in each new generation: a genetic engineering chain reaction.\n\nGene drive organisms are intended to displace or even eradicate their conspecifics in nature. Their release can have unpredictable consequences for ecosystems and food webs. It cannot be undone. In the worst case, this could lead to further species extinction and the collapse of entire ecosystems, and also endanger human health and nutrition.\n\nPrevent the release of gene drive organisms!"},{"description":"Die Stop Gene Drives Kampagne fordert, die Freisetzung von gentechnisch ver\u00e4nderten Gene Drive Organismen in die Natur zu verhindern.
