At a congress in the early 1970s, some accomplished ornithologists witnessed the presentation of the first English breeding bird atlas, compiled on the basis of counts by volunteers. That had never been seen before. Would something like this be possible in the Netherlands? It was the start of the Collaborating Organizations Bird Research Netherlands foundation.
Sovon was born and published the first Dutch breeding bird atlas just under six years later. This was based entirely on structured counts by volunteers and has become a classic in the birdwatching world. Now, fifty years after the foundation of Sovon, such counts still form the basis of the organization. In 2023 we will reflect extensively on the fiftieth anniversary of Sovon.
