German Legal Society for Animal Welfare Law

Deutsche Juristische Gesellschaft für Tierschutzrecht

The German Legal Society for Animal Welfare Law (DJGT) is an association whose members – primarily lawyers – deal with German, European and international animal welfare law.

The DJGT is committed to promoting animal welfare. The inclusion of animal protection as a state goal in the Basic Law in 2002 elevated animal protection to a constitutionally protected legal interest. The same applies to the animal protection article in European primary law. Against this background, it is our goal to work towards the effective implementation of the existing animal welfare regulations and their further development.

We would like to create a network for lawyers interested in animal welfare and promote professional exchange between them. Legal policy initiatives are to emerge from this close cooperation in order to influence the public, political decision-makers and the administration. In this way we want to bring about changes in thinking and acting in the interests of animal welfare.
